A former Birmingham police officer was arrested Thursday morning on robbery and ethic violation charges, Chief A.C. Roper and District Attorney Brandon Falls said.

Officer T'Derek Luster, 27, has been charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and two counts of ethics violations in connection with a robbery investigation. He is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on bonds totaling $1 million.

"We are extremely disappointed by the actions of this former officer," Roper said in a released statement. "As the leader of this department, I will not tolerate this illegal behavior by any of our personnel. Luster betrayed the public trust which is critical to successful police community relations."

According to police, Luster was allegedly involved in two early morning robberies, one on July 13 and a second on July 17, both of which were said to have happened in the 5100 block of Terrace M. Investigators were alerted of the crimes by one of the victims.

Following an investigation, detectives discovered evidence supporting the claims made against Luster and warrants for his arrest were later obtained.

Police say Luster was off duty and unarmed when he stole an unknown amount of cash committing the robberies.

"I appreciate the fact that the victim recognized this illegal behavior would not be tolerated by the Birmingham Police Department, so he trusted us to investigate and bring this suspect to justice." Roper said. "I am thankful the vast majority of our personnel work diligently to make Birmingham a safer city but where there is crime and corruption, we will root it out regardless of where it leads."
