HOMEWOOD-AL -

The Homewood Police Department continues its investigation into the killing of the wife of a local pastor.

Investigators remained at the scene of the crime Thursday morning, and detectives hope to wrap up by the end of the day.

52-year-old Karen Shahan was found dead inside the couple's house on the 100 block of Hugh Circle off Lakeshore Drive Tuesday.

Shortly after 11 a.m., officers responded to a report of a deceased body inside Shahan's house. Upon arriving, police found the house in disarray and Shahan dead on a couch.

The victim is the wife of Rev. Richard Shahan, a pastor at The First Baptist Church of Birmingham, which is located a short distance behind the couple's home.

Rev. Shahan was out of town visiting family when his wife's body was discovered.

The victim was an employee at an area Hobby Lobby and the store released a statement Wednesday afternoon regarding Shahan's death.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our employees. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family," a Hobby Lobby spokesperson stated in the release.

While detectives have yet to determine a motive, they haven't ruled out burglary. Anyone with information pertaining to the case is asked to call the Homewood Police Tip Line at 205-332-6262 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

The First Baptist Church of Birmingham released the following statement Thursday:

First Baptist Church of Birmingham is saddened to announce that long-time church member Karen Shahan died on July 23, 2013 in Homewood, Alabama. Karen Shahan was a member of the church choir and the wife of First Baptist Church's Children and Families Pastor, Rev. Richard Shahan. Karen Shahan's body was discovered in the couple's Homewood residence on the morning of July 23, 2013.

The cause of Karen Shahan's death is undetermined at this time. The Homewood Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the occurrence. No further information relating to the police investigation has been made available to First Baptist Church of Birmingham.

Karen Shahan is survived by her husband and the couple's two sons, Kyle and Colin (Elizabeth) and two grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements: Visitation will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, July 27, at First Baptist Church of Birmingham. A memorial service will follow at 12:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the Shahan family requests memorial gifts be made to First Baptist Church of Birmingham's Children's Ministry.
