Business owners in Birmingham's Avondale Neighborhood may soon find relief to flooding concerns.

The area, particularly 41st Street North, looked more like river Sunday during heavy rains. The flooding caused many people to raise concerns over drainage systems in the area.

Don Lupo with the City of Birmingham says a plan is underway to reduce the potential for major flooding.

He says city crews are currently fixing a culvert, but the Alabama and Tennessee River Railway (ATN) has agreed to fix a nearby culvert as well. Lupo tells ABC 33/40 says the company operates the culvert, which has debris, silt and a broken wall. Those factors, as well as possible blockage in city and Jefferson County sewer lines, contribute to flooding.

Lupo met with city engineers and ATN representatives early Wednesday morning.

He says ATN has agreed to begin fixing its culvert Thursday.
