The Homewood Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation after the wife of a local pastor was found dead inside the couple's home Tuesday.

Shortly after 11 a.m., officers responded to a report of a deceased body inside a home located at 103 Hugh Circle off of Lakeshore Drive. Upon arriving, police found the house in disarray and 52-year-old Karen Shahan dead on a couch.

The victim has since been identified as the wife of Rev. Richard Shahan, a pastor at The First Baptist Church of Birmingham, which is located a short distance behind the couple's home.

Rev. Shahan was out of town when he learned of his wife's death.

The victim was an employee at an area Hobby Lobby and the store released a statement this afternoon regarding Shahan's death.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our employees. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family," a Hobby Lobby spokesperson stated in the release.

While detectives have yet to determine a motive, they haven't ruled out burglary. Anyone with information pertaining to the case is asked to call the Homewood Police Tip Line at 205-332-6262 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
