Tulsa Health Dept. Encourages Back-To-School Vaccines

The Tulsa Health Department is encouraging parents to get their kid's immunizations before the back-to-school rush begins.

According to THD, the demand for vaccines turns into a huge rush just before the start of school in August, mostly because of the boosters children need before entering kindergarten.

Most kids going into kindergarten require a second dose of MMR, a fourth dose of polio vaccine and a fifth dose of DTaP vaccines.

Students entering 7th grade need a Tdap booster, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.

There are no new immunization requirements for the 2013-2014 school year.

THD provides the childhood immunizations at no cost to those who qualify for the Vaccines for Children program.  

Parents and guardians must bring a copy of current immunizations record to receive immunizations.
