Lyric Theatre campaign well on its way

Posted: Updated:

Drive through Birmingham's Theatre district and take a look at the Lyric Theatre. Scaffolding is up on the exterior. Work is underway to restore this grand old lady who will turn 100 in 2014.

The latest fundraising efforts to restore the Lyric are going strong. Veteran campaign director Tom Cosby reports the "Light Up the Lyric" campaign now stands at 60 percent of its goal of seven million dollars.

Cosby says there are many donors to thank. Included among them are Stewart Perry Construction that donated the project management, Lawler Ballard Van Durand which created an ad campaign, and Fravert Services provided historic signage.

The goal is to restore the Lyric Theatre to its former glory in time for its one hundredth birthday next year. It has been more than 50 years since an audience was entertained in the theatre.

Birmingham government believes the restoration will be good for the city. It put one million dollars into the project.
