Three Oklahoma State Cowboys and two Oklahoma Sooners were named to the 2013 Preseason All-Big 12 team, announced Wednesday by the league office. For the Cowboys, junior Josh Stewart, senior Calvin Barnett and senior Shaun Lewis earned first-team honors as voted on by the media representatives who cover the Big 12 Conference.
Stewart (Denton, Texas) is one of two first-team receivers honored. He is coming off a first-team All-Big 12 performance a year ago after finishing the 2012 season with 1,210 yards on 101 receptions. Stewart has also been named to the 2013 Biletnikoff Award watch list.
Barnett (Tulsa, Okla.) earned first-team honors on the defensive line. He is coming off an impressive first season at OSU when he was named the 2012 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and earned All-Big 12 honors. Barnett finished with 30 tackles, including 24 solos, and led the team with 8.0 tackles for loss. He has also been named to the preseason watch lists for the Lombardi Award, Nagurski Trophy, Bednarik Award and Outland Trophy.
Lewis (Missouri City, Texas) is a first-team all-league selection at linebacker. He has also been named to the Nagurski Trophy watch list. Lewis was a second-team all-league pick last season after finishing the year with 58 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss.
For the Sooners, cornerback Aaron Colvin and center Gabe Ikard were both selected to the All-Big 12 Team. Both players are well-represented on preseason watch lists. Most notably, Colvin is on the Jim Thorpe and Lott IMPACT Award Watch Lists, while Ikard is on the Rimington Trophy Watch List.
An All-Big 12 First Team selection by AP and the coaches in 2012, Colvin led the team with 11 pass breakups, finished second on the squad with four interceptions and was third on the team with 61 tackles (47 solo). The Owasso, Okla., native has played in 39 career games (26 starts) with the Sooners. He opened all 13 games at cornerback for OU in 2012 after starting 12 games at safety in 2011. He owns 179 career tackles (126 solo), 10.0 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 2.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and 20 pass breakups.
Ikard was also named an All-Big 12 First Team selection by AP and the coaches in 2012. An Oklahoma City, Okla., native, Ikard has played in 39 games (37 starts) on the offensive line for the Sooners. A two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, Ikard earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America First Team in 2012 and was also a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy. Ikard graduated this month with a 4.0 cumulative GPA in multidisciplinary studies and is currently studying in Ireland as part of OU’s Study Abroad program.
