In Tuscaloosa, more details are emerging in the case of a four year old girl shot.

Investigators say shots were fired into the child's house in Tuscaloosa.. and she was hit twice, while asleep.

The child is fighting for her life at Children's Hospital, while police search for the shooter.

Investigators say 4-year-old Tamerra Harper is in critical condition, but stable. The Tuscaloosa Sheriff's Office says the toddler was hit in the head and in the arm. Investigators don't believe the child was the target, however they're not calling this shooting an accident.

"I looked out and the whole block was lined with police officers and ambulances."

Lula Taylor heard the gunshots. "It's one of the saddest things I think could ever happen."

She lives just around the corner from this house on 31st Avenue in West Tuscaloosa. That's where investigators say four year old Tamerra Harper was shot around ten o'clock Friday night, while asleep in the living room.

"It's obvious, this was not an accident." Sergeant Dale Phillips says shots came from outside the house and hit the child twice. Numerous bullet holes are on the front door, siding.. even the window.

The child's grandmother and twin sister were also inside, but unharmed while her mother was at work. Phillips says "I don't think the people in the house were intended victims in this. It's safe to say another family member was the intended victim, but not the little girl."

Investigators have talked to several witnesses but are hoping to gain more information. Patrol units are paying special attention to this area. Taylor has asked for just that. "I would like to sit on my porch without having to fear."

People in the community are calling this a senseless tragedy and hope the child will make a full recovery. Ellis Cooper says "Use to be fighting with your hands, not it's guns. Need to stop all that."

No arrests have been made, but Sergeant Phillips says there are persons of interest in this case and they're also looking for a white mid-sized car believed to be involved in the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, Police Department or Cimestoppers at 752-STOP. You will remain anonymous.
