PELL CITY, Ala. -- An officer-involved shooting investigation is underway in Pell City after an on-duty officer shot a man following a confrontation Friday night.

Pell City police responded to a report of an assault on a officer around 11 p.m. and arrived to find the alleged attacker suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police say the officer shot the man during the assault in self defense.

The man was transported to UAB Hospital, where he remains in critical condition Saturday. The officer was taken to St. Vincent's St. Clair County Hospital for treatment before being released a short time later.

The identities of the officer and the suspect in the assault have not been released.
