HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn was formally inducted into the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame Friday night at the Hot Springs Convention Center.

The AHSCA announced Malzahn as a 2013 inductee in April.

"It is truly an honor and a blessing to be inducted into the Arkansas High School Hall of Fame," Malzahn said in a statement released by Auburn University. "As a native of Arkansas, it is where I learned the game of football, which makes this even more special. I'm very appreciative of all of the players and coaches who were a part of the teams we had at Hughes, Shiloh Christian and Springdale High Schools. Without them, this honor would not have been possible."

Malzahn, 47, spent 14 seasons as a high school football coach in Arkansas and guided three teams at two different schools to state championships, including back-to-back titles at Shiloh in 1998 and 1999 and an undefeated championship season at Springdale in 2005, his final season as a high school coach. By that time, he had become widely-known and respected for his offensive acumen and the state's flagship university took notice, plucking him from the high school coaching ranks.

In 2006, the Irving, Texas native's meteoric coaching rise landed him a bona fide college job when he was hired to chomp his gum on the sidelines of Razorback Stadium as the offensive coordinator under then University of Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt.

Seven years, a handful of NCAA offensive records, a Heisman Trophy quarterback and a BCS National Championship later, Malzahn is now the leader of the Family on the Plains and a Hall of Famer in Arkansas, where it all began.

Along with Malzahn, five other high school coaches were inducted into the AHSCA Hall of Fame tonight, but none stood out more than the driver of the Gus Bus.
