A head-on collision on Highway 79 near the Blount and Jefferson County line has sent three people to the hospital.

According to Jefferson County Chief Sheriff Deputy Randy Christian, the head-on collision was caused when a man traveling north in a small, red sedan rear-ended another vehicle before losing control, crossing the center line and hitting a Ford pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the red car had to be extracted by rescue crews and was transported to the hospital by Life Saver helicopter. He sustained serious injuries but is expect to survive. A passenger in his vehicle was transported by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck was also taken to the hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the rear-ended vehicle wasn't injured and refused treatment at the scene.

Christian says speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.
