The perfect car for a teenager - big, slow, and ugly

Posted: Updated:

Summertime provides more free time for teenagers to get behind the wheel. Couple that with the fact that 16 year olds have a higher crash rate than drivers of any other age and the crash risk increases incrementally with each mile per hour over the speed limit, and it is easy to see why parents have reason to worry.

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among U.S. teenagers. In the first year of driving, one in five 16 year old drivers has an accident.

A vice-president of the National Safety Council shared the formula he used to buy cars for his six children. The vehicle had to be big, slow, and ugly.

Small cars may be easy on the budget and great on gas mileage, but do not offer the protection of a midsize car.

It is not a good idea to tempt a teenager with a high-performance car. The urge to go fast will win out almost every time.

As for being ugly, remember your first car. It didn't have to be fast to be beautiful - it was just grand to have a set of wheels to call your own.
