This week's Crime Stoppers homicide case features a killing that happened Wednesday, June 5. A 38-year-old man lost his life after he was gunned down outside his home. Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper explains why it's crucial you help.

"I'm Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper.

We need someone to provide the missing link on this case. It's critical we get justice for Manquel Mertez Whittsett. He was 38 years old when he died. Whittsett was killed outside his Birmingham apartment.

Let's take you back to Wednesday, June 5. Around 1 am, police were called to the 100 block of Leaf Lake Blvd.  When they got there, Whittsett was lying on the ground beside a black 2004 BMW 545I. He had been shot. Whittsett was taken to UAB Hospital where he died.

Several people who live at the apartment complex say they heard several gunshots and found Whittsett inside his BMW.

All we need now is for someone to give us a name. Or maybe you have some other clues to help us build a solid case.

If you know those answers or anything else, call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. We'll keep you anonymous, and if there's an arrest from your tip, you get a cash reward.

We will not take your name. We will not record the call, and Crime Stoppers cannot call you to court to testify.

Tonight, there's a killer on your streets, but you have a chance to do something about it, and Manquel Mertez Whittsett will have true justice.

With Crime Stoppers, I'm Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper."
