Pope John Paul II cleared for sainthood

Posted: Updated:

By early December, Pope John Paul II may be canonized by the Catholic church. A commission of cardinals and bishops met Tuesday to consider the case and signed off on Pope John Paul's second miracle. The only remaining step is for Pope Francis to approve it.

The first miracle was the healing of a French nun whose recovery from Parkinson's disease had no medical explanation. The nun had prayed for John Paul II's "intercession."

The second miracle reportedly took place on the day John Paul II was beatified in St Peter's Square in 2011. It was the healing of a woman from Costa Rica.

One possible canonization date is December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. John Paul II could be canonized together with Pope John XXIII, who called the Second Vatican Council.

John Paul has been on the fast track for possible sainthood since his death in 2005. Some, however, are concerned about the process. Some of the issues being faced now by the Vatican - financial scandals, clerical sex abuse, and dysfunctional governance rose to the surface during John Paul's papacy.
