MONTGOMERY-AL -

Governor Robert Bentley released this statement to Focus@4 after Alabama Secretary of State Beth Chapman announced her plans to resign on August 1st.

"Beth Chapman has done an outstanding job as Secretary of State, and I appreciate so much her public service to Alabama.  She has always worked hard to protect everyone's right to vote, especially our men and women who serve in the military.  I have the utmost respect for her.  Her honesty and integrity are above reproach.  I wish her the very best."

A few months ago, Chapman was considered a possible candidate for governor.  She said she would consider a run in the future but not in 2014.

Seventeen months remain on Chapman's term as Secretary of State.  Gov. Bentley will appoint someone to complete her term.
