BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Carver High School was alive with the sound of music, Wednesday.

It was concert day, marking the end of the June Tunes Summer Jazz Music Camp.

Local students, from 5th to 12th grade, have been attending the camp for the past four weeks, studying jazz composers, jazz history and musicians.

Wednesday's concert played host to about 500 students from local enrichment camps.

Birmingham City Schools Fine Arts Coordinator, John McAphee, Jr., says this program continues to help young students stay on the right path.

"It's been very successful," McAphee, Jr. said. "A lot of the kids started when their feet could not touch the floor and they are now on full band scholarships to college."

McAphee, Jr. says many of those students now in college with band scholarships come back to the camp every summer to lend a helping hand and help teach today's young jazz musicians.

The June Tunes Summer Jazz Music Camp started in 1998.
