BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Reigning 3-time AMA Pro SuperBike champion Josh Hayes overcame a huge mistake at the start and earned his third victory of the Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing season Saturday at Barber Motorsports Park.

Hayes was penalized for anticipating the start of the race, resulting in 5 seconds being added to his overall race time. However, the Yamaha rider recovered and beat out a charging Suzuki-mounted Roger Hayden to win the 21-lap race by 0.245 seconds.

"It was a very tough race, especially after creating my own problems with the five-second jumpstart penalty," Hayes said. "I just put my head down and rode as hard as I could from then on. I pushed harder for race distance than I have in a long time."

The SuperBike race on Sunday will be the final race of the doubleheader weekend.
