BIRMINGHAM - AL -

The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) is set to welcome 30 new buses to its fleet.

One bus has already arrived in the Magic City and is being tested on all city routes. The other 29 buses will begin arriving around mid-July.

Birmingham coughed up more than $2.3 million of the $14 million price tag for the buses while federal funding was used to pay off the balance.

BJCTA Executive Director, Ann Dawson-August, says this is money well spent.

"We want to have a good fleet on the street, every single day," she said. "So people can be proud of the vehicles, not only the ones they see on the street that they're funding, but that the passengers have the capacity to ride in something that's clean, that's new that all your other, larger cities have, as well."

Dawson-August says 30 new buses will change the perception of the BJCTA and the city of Birmingham.

"Even [those] that don't ride the buses will benefit from a new fleet from being out there on the street, because we've been named an All-America City," Dawson-August said. "We want to make sure that we have vehicles that stand up to that title."

Dawson-August says all buses should be up and running in Birmingham by the end of September.
