BIRMINGHAM - AL -
One of the most talked-about names in football is in the Magic City. Tim Tebow is speaking to a crowd at the BJCC as a part of a men's ministry conference. Over 7,000 men are packed inside the arena for the "Gridiron Men's Conference." It's the first one held here in Birmingham

"You may call it tebowing, we call it praying," Phil Waldrep, of Phil Waldrep Ministries said from the stage.

Friday night, thousands of men from across the U.S. came - not just to hear a celebrity- but to demonstrate a message he wants the world to hear.

"Tim Tebow is going to talk about hey the world tries to get you to conform and tries to get you to do things you shouldn't do, he's going to talk about as Christians you can stand firm," Waldrep said.

"It wasn't just for Tim Tebow, but that's a big part of it," Joe Lorenz, who traveled from Florida said. "I went to Florida, and he went to Florida. He's still a great role model I think for kids and adults."

"I think Tim's message tonight will resonate with every age group and will resonate with young people especially to see that he is an example that you can live a good moral life and still be a great athlete and succeed in the world of sports," Waldrep said.

The annual Gridiron conference is organized by Phil Waldrep Ministries. The message this year, is standing strong in the faith.

"A gridiron man is a man who loves God, loves his family, loves people," Waldrep said.

Fred Luter, the President of the Southern Baptist Convention, shared a message of standing strong in adversity-  after losing his home in Hurricane Katrina.

"It was a very difficult time," Luter said. "I could have given up, thrown in the towel, and thought about doing that. But thankfully God allowed me to stand and now I can share that testimony with people as I travel across the country."

"For that many many to come out for an event is just phenomenal," Luter said.

The conference will continue Saturday. It features Christian authors and speakers as well as the Chick-fil-a President, Dan Cathy.

Police in Gadsden are trying to return hundreds of stolen items to their rightful owners. Captain Paul Cody said officers bust a large fencing operation this week. Joe Pearl, 75, is the suspect in the case. It took a long time to sort through and document a very wide range of stolen property. "We've collected a lot of stuff," Cody said. "Toilet paper. We have non-firearms related weapons, we have karaoke machines, musical instruments, car stereos, underwear."More >>
