Vouchers in Alabama for homeless veterans

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have teamed up to provide permanent homes for homeless veterans. Nationally--the partnership provides $60 million to public housing agencies.

Here's out it breaks down in our state. Alabama will receive more than $400,000, which provides 50 vouchers for Jefferson County and 25 for Huntsville. Each voucher provides a permanent home for a veteran, many of whom are living with chronic disabling conditions.

On a single night--more than 62,000 veterans in our country are homeless. The goal of this HUD-VASH voucher program is to end veteran homelessness by 2015.

Since 2008, a total of more than 48,000 vouchers have been awarded across the country.

This is the first round of the 2013 HUD-VASH funding. HUD expects to announce more HUD-VASH funding this summer.
