Alabama beef jerky recalled

EUFAULLA - AL -

An Alabama-based company has issued a recall for about 1,800 pounds of beef jerky.  Hickory Hollow Jerky is produced in Eufaula.  Some of the company's jerky is under recall for reportedly being misbranded and not including information about an allergen.  The products contain Worcestershire sauce and anchovy paste. Officials say fish is a known allergen and should be listed on the product's labels.

The company recalled 3 oz. packages of Original Recipe, Sweet Heat and Hot Shot beef jerky, which carry the numbers 34550 in the USDA section of their inspection labels. The products were manufactured between December 4, 2012 and June 4, 2013.  They were sold online and in stores nationwide.

The problem was discovered by an FSIS inspector who conducted a label review for accuracy. FSIS took the step of issuing the notice in an effort to protect vulnerable consumers after observing an increase in the number of products recalled from 2008 through 2012 due to the presence of undeclared allergens or other ingredients.  FSIS and the company report no incidents of adverse reactions linked to the products.

However, anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider. Consumers and media with questions about the recall should contact Russ Robbins, a company consumer contact, at hhjerky@gmail.com.  The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854).
