The Cornerstone Schools of Alabama makes history in Birmingham. The following is a press release from school administrators:

Birmingham, AL-Cornerstone Schools of Alabama has today become the first

International Baccalaureate Primary School in Birmingham, Alabama. The school is

set to host a press conference on Monday, June 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Cornerstone

School to announce to the achievement. Those speaking will be Cornerstone School's

board chairman and former Alabama Chief Justice, Drayton Nabers, and Cornerstone

School's Executive Director, Dr. Nita Carr.

The IB has a positive impact on students, schools and their wider communities with

learning going well beyond the classroom. Its unique and innovative approach to

learning means both students and teachers are genuinely engaged with the programs

and benefit from being a part of an unparalleled global network. Students are able to

participate in international conferences and educators work with their peers

internationally to ensure that IB remains at the cutting edge of international education.

Cornerstone School's Executive Director, Dr. Nita Carr says, "The reason we began

the three year process of becoming an International Baccalaureate Primary school is

because the IB curriculum aligns with Cornerstone's core values: Excellence for God,

excellence for children, and excellence for education."

Cornerstone School is a non-profit, Christian school that serves Birmingham's inner

city children from prekindergarten to eighth grade. With an emphasis on data driven

instruction, rigorous academics, and character development Cornerstone students

broke the mold by exceeding Alabama's averages when comparing student

achievement with family income. In addition to Cornerstone's recent International

Baccalaureate status, the school holds dual accreditation by both the Southern

Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Association of Christian Schools

International (ACSI).
