5-year-old boy found safe after being kidnapped by his non-custodial mother

UPDATE:

Birmingham police say they have located a 5-year-old boy who was kidnapped by his non-custodial mother. An investigative team working to find the child located Jamari Knox around 12:10 a.m. Friday. The child was unharmed and is now back in DHR custody.

Police say the mother, Daphne Moorer, is now in police custody.

The Birmingham Police Department reports that they are searching for a 5-year-old boy who was kidnapped by his biological, non-custodial mother Thursday afternoon during a supervised visit at the Department of Human Resources offices.

Jamari Knox was taken by his mother, Daphne Moorer, 28, at around 2:30 p.m. She is reportedly driving a 2000, red, four-door Chevrolet Impala with Alabama tags. Her license plate number is 74164AV.

The little boy was last seen wearing blue shorts and a t-shirt. Moorer was last seen wearing white pants, a green top and black sandals. She may also be wearing glasses and her hair in a ponytail.

Moorer reportedly suffers from paranoid schizophrenia which is a chronic mental illness in which a person loses touch with reality.
