20 arrested in large-scale drug roundup in DeKalb County

Posted: Updated:

An extensive investigation into drug trafficking in DeKalb County has yielded numerous arrests, Sheriff Jimmy Harris and Fort Payne Police Chief Randy Bynum reported Wednesday.

The first phase of the investigation that began several months ago concluded this afternoon when members of the DeKalb Co. Drug Task Force began a county-wide drug roundup aimed at curbing the illegal sale of drugs and misuse of prescription medicine in the area.  Law enforcement arrested 20 people on various drug charges.

The task force consists of four full-time agents and five part-time officers from DeKalb Co. Sheriff's Office, Fort Payne Police Department and the district attorney Mike Odell's office. Sheriff Harris, Chief Bynum and Odell serve as board members of the task force directed by Darrell Collins.

"I'm very proud of the job these officers are doing as we attempt to make our community a safer place." Odell stated in a news release.

The four task force leaders met this week to discuss future plans for the unit and the acquisition of new equipment that is expected to expedite the testing process of illegal drugs.

"We have been working these cases for some time now and we have made several arrests." Sheriff Harris said. "These arrests today are not the last. We will continue to go after drug dealers and suppliers. This is a good point to re-group and continue this investigation in other areas. We will not stop as long as there is one person out there selling drugs."

"We all work as a team and this operation shows how we can be successful as we attempt to stamp out the drug problem in our community." Chief Bynum said.
