Flash flooding causing major headaches in downtown Birmingham; crews conducting water rescue

Birmingham Fire and Rescue are conducting a water rescue Wednesday afternoon near the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

A woman in a van became stranded in flood waters underneath a viaduct in the 3200 block of Messer Airport Highway, and rescue crews are working to pull the woman to safety. An ABC 33/40 photojournalist has joined in the effort to push the vehicle out of the flood waters. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Crews have also been called to reports of a flooded home in the 400 block of 62nd Street North and two trapped vehicles in the 1100 block of 5 Mile Road near Roebuck. Shortly before 4 p.m., police and fire were called to an accident on Interstate 59 near the I-459 interchange.

Details of the incidents were not immediately made available.

Near UAB Hospital, two men assisted a person who became stuck in a flooded street.

In the Clay area, flooding has caused travel problems on Old Springville Road, and the city's mayor is on the scene directing traffic.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a flash flood warning for Jefferson and St. Clair counties until 5:30 p.m. Some areas of the city have received over three inches of rain as storms continue to develop and back-build to the southwest. Numerous flooding problems are being reported and are expected to continue to develop and worsen. In northwest Trussville, over two inches of rain fell in just 30 minutes, according to veteran weatherman J.B. Elliott.
