STATEWIDE -

The Alabama Department of Public Safety says the number of unrestrained vehicle crashes decreased from last month.  According to preliminary traffic crash data, there were 29 people killed in vehicle crashes investigated by state troopers in Alabama in May 2013 compared to 46 in April.  Of that number, 24 were in vehicles where seat belts were available.  12 victims were not wearing seat belts down from 27 in April.

Transportation Director, John Cooper, says "lowering the number of unrestrained traffic crash deaths is welcome news, especially during the month that has the Memorial Day holiday which kicks off the summer driving season.

DPS and ALSOT jointly release to the public each month the number of unrestrained fatalities in crashes investigated by troopers in an effort to improve seat belt use and decrease deaths on Alabama highways.
