BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Quiwintre Frye and Michelle Ballew from Girls Inc. dropped by Talk of Alabama today to talk about the organization's "Eureka!" program.

Here is some info taken from the Girls Inc. of Central Alabama web site:

Since 1993, Girls Inc. has offered the Eureka! Teen Achievement Program. Eureka! is designed to promote confidence and competence in girls while they explore fields like engineering, architecture, medicine and, digital technology. It includes four weeks of day camp each summer on the campus of UAB plus monthly evening activities during the school year. The intensive science, math, technology and adventure sports program is open to girls entering the eighth and ninth grades.

Daily activities include hands-on lessons led by experienced instructors in a lab environment. Projects include the use of a variety of tools, concepts, and technology that enhance girls' knowledge and expose them to new ideas. Participants also enjoy field trips and physical activity through both traditional and non-traditional adventure sports activities such as rock climbing and hiking.

Currently Registering

Girls Inc. is looking for girls with a sincere interest in science, math, and technology to participate in this year's Eureka! program. All participants are required to submit an application along with academic references. Participant selection is based on enthusiasm and a zest for adventure. The 2013 summer camp runs July 8th - Aug. 2nd weekdays from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The annual program fee is $325.
