Veteran Marine Corps K9's join Jefferson County Sheriff's Office

JEFFERSON COUNTY - AL -

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has expanded its force by two.

Earlier this month, deputies traveled to South Carolina to pick up a veteran Marine Corp K9.

Last year, the sheriff's office K9 unit learned several dogs that had been in service with the Marine Corps would be retired. This was due to the downsizing of the contract with the company that trained the dogs for the Marines. As a result, the dogs were offered free of charge to law enforcement agencies.

After selecting one dog earlier this month, deputies learned they would have the option of a second K9. Deputies selected four-year-old Dash and six-year-old Tori. They are both trained in explosive detection and have served alongside Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. They will be assigned to school resource deputies and used to help protect Jefferson County students.
