Multiple train cars derailed Thursday near Phillips Elementary School in Bear Creek, Alabama.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office reports that the nearby areas are not in any danger "that they're aware of" at this time, but evacuations of the elementary school and one other school are underway.

The Norfolk Southern train carrying unknown materials lost control of several of its cars at around 12:30 p.m. causing some concern initially that there was a chemical spill. Local law enforcement has told ABC 33/40 reporter Cory McGinnis that chemicals were not spilled in the accident.

Cleanup crews are currently attempting to clear the scene as investigators begin to determine what caused the derailment. No injuries have been reported.

ABC 33/40 will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information is made available.
