BIRMINGHAM - AL -

One state representative says a bill awaiting the governor's signature could "significantly" reduce the line and wait time at revenue offices.

Representative Paul DeMarco, (R) Homewood, sponsored a bill that only requires one owner to provide identification for car tag renewals. He says even the Alabama Department of Revenue believes it will cut the wait time.

Currently, all owners listed on a car's registration must provide identification. It has been blamed for the delay in car tag offices.

If the governor signs the bill into law, it would go into effect immediately. A second portion that would allow special plates to be purchased online would start January 2014.

DeMarco sponsored legislation last year to allow Jefferson County cities to renew car tags for its residents. That bill became law. He says eight mayors are interested.
