Governor wants to delay school tax credits

MONTGOMERY - AL -

Governor Robert Bentley wants Legislature to delay Alabama's private school tax credits for two years.

Bentley told chamber of commerce leaders Wednesday that a delay will give schools time to try to get off the failing list.

The Legislature passed a law in February that provides tax credits for parents who move their children from failing public schools to private schools or non-failing public schools. The Legislature passed a bill last week to make some modifications in that law. Bentley says he will send back that bill with an executive amendment on the Legislature's final meeting day Monday. But he said he doesn't know if he has the votes to pass it.

Bentley says delaying the tax credits will also help repay money owed the Alabama Trust Fund.
