Salt intake could be a good thing

Posted: Updated:

For years, experts have said Americans should cut their salt intake. Now, a new report is challenging that view.

The Institute of Medicine released a new study that found reducing salt intake below the recommended amount of 2300 milligrams per day may be unnecessary.

The I.O.M. reviewed recent studies through 2012 on the connection between salt intake and  health problems. Higher salt consumption has been linked to hypertension and cardiovascular disease. But I.O.M. researchers say there's not enough evidence to support lowering salt intake to 1500 milligrams a day as recommended by The American Heart Association. They say lowering salt intake by too much actually poses a health risk.

The American Heart Association disagrees with key conclusions of the new I.O.M. study.
