National Bike Helmet Safety Week

Posted: Updated:

The week of May 6 is National Helmet Safety Week.

A recent Boston Children's Hospital study revealed about 3/4 of the people who die in bicycle crashes each year, die from head injuries. Doctors say when it comes to your helmet, the most important thing is the fit. It should be tight but not uncomfortable and it should not move back and forth or side-to-side. All bike helmets must meet minimum safety standards, so paying more for one does not buy you better protection.

Doctor Michael Macknin from Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital says, "You can't really tell which helmet is better than the other. All you know is anything on the market meets standards and it's fine to buy."

The general recommendation is to replace your helmet every three to five years, regardless of condition.
