Auburn University's landscape and architecture students have been hard at work this Spring exploring possibilities for a new trail network that could stretch across Birmingham. The plan is called Cross to Sloss, and features conceptual designs for the Jones Valley "artery" of the Red Rock Ridge and Valley Trail System, running from the Crossplex in Five Points West to Sloss Furnaces, and on to 41st Street and Avondale Park.
REV Birmingham has been working with students in the Auburn program, who spent their semester investigating intensive, strategic landscape interventions and ways to leverage the Tiger Grant investment in Birmingham communities. The result of their research is the Cross to Sloss Studio - a collection of creative thoughts on ways to create catalyst and real estate opportunities along the trail.
The Studio will focus on three areas: Open areas around the Birmingham Cross Plex, Tuscaloosa Avenue in Arlington West End and 1st Avenue South from Sloss Furnace to 41st Street.
