The Birmingham Police Department announced Wednesday that they have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection to a fatal shooting in Gate City Monday that left a mother of three dead.

Corderious McClellan, of Birmingham, has been charged with capital murder for the shooting death of 24-year-old Sheri Williams. He has been transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where he is being held without bond.

"I'm pleased to announce that a suspect has been arrested and charged in a homicide of 24-year-old Sheri Williams which occurred in our city just two days ago." Chief A.C. Roper announced at a news conference.

Williams was holding her 10-day-old son in the doorway of her home located at 64th Court Way South when she was shot and killed by stray gunfire intended for her son. The newborn was not injured in the shooting, but Williams was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"My baby's son was trying to break a fight up or something and some dude came behind him shooting and the bullet was just bouncing." the victim's mother, Rinda Williams, said Monday.

The victim reportedly had been attempting to move out of the Gate City neighborhood to escape the persistent crime in the area.

The latest homicide arrest by Birmingham police comes just one day after Chief Roper and Mayor William Bell announced the apprehension of 17-year-old Justin Jones, suspected of a fatal shooting at Railroad Park in March. He has been charged with murder for the death of 15-year-old Jarmaine Walton and is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail.

"Our department has really had a busy 24 hours." Roper said. "After arresting and charging a suspect in the Railroad Park shooting, we then turned our crime reduction team to looking for this suspect."

Roper said the arresting officers hit the streets in search for McClellan, and he feels word spread quickly that the hunt was on for Williams' suspected killer, prompting him to surrender to Birmingham police at its headquarters.

Detectives believe McClellan acted alone in the tragic shooting, one that left a family heartbroken and the community shaking their heads in shock and disbelief.

"This crime is one that shocked the conscience of our community and our most experience investigators. So I am pleased that we were able to charge a person, and we believe it's the right person, within 48 hours." Roper said.
