AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - The Auburn Tigers leave Gus Malzahn's first spring with an ongoing quarterback battle and uncertainty about the status of safety Demetruce McNeal.

Malzahn's biggest praise after Wednesday's final practice was the attitude of players he said "were pretty separated" after a 3-9 season.

McNeal was the team's No. 2 tackler but missed the last five practices for what Malzahn described only as "off-the-field issues."

Quarterbacks Jonathan Wallace and Kiehl Frazier will be joined in the bid for a starting job by three signees in preseason camp, including junior college transfer Nick Marshall and freshmen Jeremy Johnson and Jason Smith.

The Tigers drew a school-record 83,401 fans to the spring game. Malzahn says he "really felt like that made a statement to the rest of the college football world about Auburn."
