BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Update:

Jefferson County hired Alabama Supreme Court Justice Mike Bolin Thursday. He will replace Jeff Sewell who involuntarily retired a few weeks ago. George Bowman and Sandra Little Brown voted no due to speed of hire. Bolin will start within 30 days or when Governor Robert Bentley appoints someone to his current position. We will have more on this story tonight beginning at 5.

Jefferson County will vote on hiring Alabama Supreme Court Justice Mike Bolin Thursday. He would replace the lead county attorney who involuntarily retired.

Commissioners will vote on making Bolin the next county attorney in a special called meeting Thursday.

Bolin has served as an associate justice on the state's highest court since 2005. He's a lifelong Jefferson County resident who graduated from Shades Valley High School before going onto Samford University and Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.

Bolin practiced law in Birmingham from 1973 to 1988. That's when he was elected as Probate Judge of Jefferson County. He served in that position until he got his seat on the Supreme Court.

The previous county attorney, Jeff Sewell, involuntarily retired a few weeks ago amid concerns from commissioners that he didn't have the county's best interest in mind.
