First responders to learn about Autism Awareness

First responders will learn how to better communicate with people who have Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The Pelham Fire Department is working with the Alabama Fire College to present a four-hour course called "Autism Awareness for First Responders."  Firefighters, 911 operators, EMS and police officers will get tips and resources.

The news release cites the statistic which says 1 in 88 children have autism.  

"Being prepared to identify and communicate effectively with these persons.. Promotes integrity and goodwill in the department but also instills a feeling of confidence toward the responding department from parents of children with autism," according to the release.

The classes are available April 22, 23, and 24, 2013.  There are two sessions per day:
Morning 8:30AM-12:30PM
Afternoon Session: 1:30PM-5:30PM
