JeffCo attorney's future has to be discussed in public

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

The future of Jefferson County's lead attorney will be publicly discussed Friday. Commissioners legally cannot talk about it privately all because of Jeff Sewell's pay.

Commissioners had planned on calling an executive session Thursday over Sewell's job performance. He was put on paid leave Monday for "multiple issues on multiple fronts."

But according to the Open Meeting Law, the performance of any employee who makes more than 75 thousand dollars cannot be discussed privately. Sewell makes 375 thousand.

Commissioners will meet again Friday. They aren't willing to say whether their minds are made up yet.

"We'll just talk about some of the things that have transpired. I think it's good it's open to the public. The public does not need to be in the dark with this decision," said Commissioner Sandra Little Brown.

The meeting will begin Friday at 10:15 a.m..
