In front of a sellout crowd of 8,505 fans and in the shadows of a city determined to claw its way out of irrelevance, the Birmingham Barons finally took the field, Regions Field, Wednesday night.

Despite all the naysayers and 433 days after shoveling the first speck of dirt at the groundbreaking ceremony of the $64 million ballpark, Mayor William Bell took center stage to throw out the first pitch, officially reuniting a minor league baseball team with its home town after nearly 26 years of separation.

Fans, businesses, city leaders, members of the media and others were buzzing with excitement on Twitter before, during and after the Barons' 9-5 victory over the Mississippi Braves.

Check out a great time-lapse video of Regions Field from al.com photographer Joe Songer and see what people are saying about the inaugural game below.
