Governor Robert Bentley announced his intention to seek re-election of a second term this week.

"I remain humbled and honored to serve the people of this great state as Governor. After prayerful consideration, Dianne and I have decided to seek the Republican nomination for a second term," Bentley announced.

"Our state has been through a great deal of hardship over the last two years, but we have also enjoyed a great deal of success," he said. "I am proud of the progress we have made, especially when it comes to economic prosperity. I look forward to continuing that progress in a second term."

Alabama's unemployment rate was 9.3% when Bentley took office and the most recent unemployment rate was 7.3%. Bentley has announced 38,000 new, future jobs since he was inaugurated in January, 2011. He has kept his commitment to refuse a salary until Alabama reaches full employment.

Bentley is committed to saving taxpayers more than $1 billion in annual savings by the end of his first term without raising taxes. To date, more than $750 million in savings has been identified.

Governor Bentley's ATRIP program is the largest road and bridge project in the history of Alabama. The program provides $613 million for 439 road and bridge projects throughout the state.

The Republican primary will be held June 4, 2014.
