Indy car race brings fans from across US

Tens of thousands of racing fans are headed to Birmingham this weekend for what is called "the Augusta National of auto racing."

The Honda Indy Grand Prix is underway at Barber Motorsports Park.

Anywhere from $24-$30 million gets generated by this race weekend alone.

Fans come to Birmingham from all fifty states and nine countries. Race promoters say, about 50% of ticket sales are in the state of Alabama.

Hotels in the metro area are booked solid for Sunday's race.

This is the fourth year the Indy car series has raced at Barber. Gene Hallman with Zoom Motorsports says, this race could be one of the biggest yet.

"This race looks great in terms of support from spectators, corporations, we have about 500 volunteers out supporting this race, it's a real community event, a statewide event," says Hallman.

The premiere race is Sunday at 2:40pmCT
