JaMarcus Russell hopes to use the 'less is more' mentality to get another shot at the NFL.

The former No. 1 overall NFL draft pick in 2007 says he's dropped 27 pounds in his attempt to earn another shot at professional football.

Russell says he's no longer "breathing like a fat man".

"Through the first couple week I could barely make it through the workout. It was crazy," Russell told CBS Sports. "We go in to do the warm-up and here I am breathing like a fat man. So now I'm breathing pretty good and able to stand on my own two feet."

Russell was selected first overall by the Oakland Raiders, but his career soured quickly, and he was out of a job after only three seasons. Russell's last NFL pass was in the final game of the 2009 season.

Russell has been working out with former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia at the TEST Academy in San Diego.

Russell will likely hold a workout for NFL teams next week.
