Birmingham mentoring program for fatherless boys on the brink of closure

Posted: Updated:

While statistics show having two parents in the household is the ideal set-up for children, the reality is that many young people are being raised in single-parent households. And that situation can affect children in a number of ways.

According to Children-Our Investment's website, 63 percent of youth suicides are from fatherless homes, 85 percent of children who show behavioral problems come from fatherless homes 85 percent of young people in prison were raised in a home without a father.

An organizer of one local group that has been mentoring fatherless boys for years says it could be on the brink of ending its work because of a lack in funding. The group is called Team Focus. It's been around since 2000, and has 13 chapters across the country. The Birmingham chapter director Justin Sims says that possibility of his program ending would be unfortunate because the program has saved many young men from a life in the streets.
