Birmingham SCLC president urges communities to pray for nonviolence

Posted: Updated:

In an effort to curb youth violence in Birmingham, Bishop Calvin Woods, president of the local chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, is urging churches and communities to pray for peace.

He and other members of the SCLC presented their mission Wednesday at Kelly Ingram Park. Woods says communities have gotten away from prayer. Only through faith can communities unite in peace, he says.

"We must act resolutely to destabilize violence, unemployment, lawlessness, prejudice and hatred through prayer," Woods says.

He calls on church leaders to organize "praying intercessors," which he defines as someone who acts or pleads to God on behalf of and in the best interest of others.

The SCLC is hosting a series of events this week in honor of the 50th year commemoration of the Civil Rights Movement as well as the commemoration of the assassination of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
