Broken Arrow Schools are shuffling students, as it redesigns school boundaries to handle population growth. The district is now growing with new students and new construction. Last night the school board voted to redo middle school boundaries, after previously changing elementary schools.
Now, families may need to check to see what schools their children will attend next year. Highland Elementary was a new school that opened at the start of this new year. Those fifth graders will progress on to the new middle school, still under construction, Oneta Ridge Middle School.
The district is growing by nearly 300 students a year. Oneta is one of six new buildings that will open in the fall. The district has redesigned boundaries to even out student population and to relieve overcrowding. Including elementary and middle school students, about two thousand boys and girls will make changes.
"We want to make sure we are planning for the future by looking at enrollment growth our demographer is projecting and also trying to better balance enrollment each of our new school sites," explained Tara Thompson, spokesperson for Broken Arrow Public Schools.
Six new schools will open in the fall including three preschool buildings, two elementary schools and one middle school. .
