Governor Robert Bentley is setting a goal to raise teachers' pay by almost 10% over the next three years.
Bentley has recommended that the State Legislature approves a 2.5% percent cost-of-living raise for the 2013-2014 school year. Bentley says that he intends to propose a similar amount for the 2014-2015 and the 2015-2016 school years as well.
The Governor says that getting close to 10% is reasonable because the state's economy is improving and tax collections for the education budget are increasing. He says he has not recommended a raise for state employees out of the state's General Fund budget because the budget is still lagging.
