BIRMINGHAM - AL -

In Birmingham, the question is "how to move the city forward?"

City leaders have spent the past 18 months talking with and listening to citizens. The result is a draft of Birmingham's first comprehensive plan in more than 50 years.

Tom Magee, city planner for Birmingham, says the comprehensive plan could be finalized within the next few weeks.

This plan will serve as a roadmap for the next 20 years for Birmingham. Its focus is to improve housing, promote job growth and economic development, along with increasing 'green space' across the city.

Ten community meetings sought public input.

Next week, will be the last chance for the public to get to weigh in before the draft turns into the plan.

"If not by next week, probably by the next week, the plan will be adopted by the planning commission, and then it's our goal to set up a couple of meetings with the city council to endorse the plan," says Magee.

The last public hearing will be Thursday, April 4 at 6:00p.m. in the city council chambers.

The planning commission will hear suggestions from the public. Anyone who wants to see a copy of the plan, can go online to do so here. Hard copies of the plan at every Birmingham Public Library branch.
