Your Health: 3-26-13 Divorce affects on children

Posted: Updated:

New research reveals children whose parents divorce are more likely to smoke as adults than children of non-divorced parents.

Researchers from the University of Toronto found men who were younger than age 18 when their parents divorced were 48 percent more likely to have smoked at least 100 or more cigarettes than men whose parents did not divorce.   For women, the risk was 39 percent higher.

The study suggests that smoking may have been their way of coping with the affects of divorce.

The findings appear in the journal, Public Health.
