Competition will be a focus for UAB football during spring drills

UAB football coach Garrick McGee wants to make sure his players don't have a sense of entitlement going into spring drills.

"There's no one that's solidified a position," McGee said on Monday. "We have a first team all conference tailback on our team, but we also have Greg Franklin and Brashr Coles on our team. I don't think Darrin (Reaves) at all would say his spot is secure."

The Blazers begin spring practice on Wednesday.

UAB returns 18 starters from last year's team that finished 3-9.

"The offseason is just what it is--it's the offseason," McGee said. "We're fortunate that we're going to get 15 opportunities to go on the field and play football, but it is just the offseason. We are going to work hard at developing a program, but you're not going to win any games based on what happens in spring ball."

McGee will get answers as to his teams work ethic. He'll be looking to see positive effects from the offseason workout program and establish team leaders.

UAB opens the season against Troy on August 31st.
